I have not fully read this article. But know what it is.
Usually they are written by tribal themselves, or their political masters (who are cronies for bigger political criminals). Here is a difference. It is written by an evangelist.
If the tribals write such ones, it will be full of self pity, loathing for the powers that be, crying hoarse for that middleman, the bad hill roads and so on and so on and even may include, the recent rains , and the non glowing electrical bulb in the school toilet or even the non availability of their favourite channels. It is all too familiar.
Come on, pity mongers. Let me have some statistics. In what way your condition is different from the national average ? In what way you are worse off than the ordinary peasants who are declared non adivasis ? Please find such data. We will have some data for a start.
My mother was a tribal woman. Her sister was a graduate and a Member of parliament in Nehru's cabinet. Her name is Akkamma Devi, in case you want to verify. My Uncle was an Engineering Graduate. All but two of by mothers brothers and sisters were graduates. My mother was a double post graduate. All this was in 1950 s. Now, 90 % of her community is educated and are respectable people.
They did not wait for human rights activists and evangelists to deliver them out of their plight. they did it with their own resolve. people like my grandfather, had a vision which made their girl children literate. Now, anybody listening ? This should sound as an eye opener.
Missionaries and Tribal education:
Now, let me come to another issue. That of the evangelists talking hoarse about tribal education. I read a book from Ramakrishna Matt that says that real higher education started in the northeast only after the advent of The mutt in tribal areas. Till then, the book says, the evangelists ran schools only upto middle level or highschool only. The Swamy , who wrote the book , says that the tribals were purposefully undereducated so that they cannot question the missionaries back.
The more I hear such self pity from the tribals , I feel like shouting above them to set their own house in order before accusing the scape goats - the government. Let this whine come to an end. But that will put the self appointed human right activists out of business.
