Dumka, Jharkhand (PTI): Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Marandi on Sunday clarified that the UPA government wished to negotiate with land owners and did not want to acquire land by force for setting up a thermal power plant at Aamgachhi in the district.

Describing the violent incident in Dumka on Saturday as "unfortunate", Marandi said that several organisations had been launching agitations against displacement but some of them with good intention while others for self-interest.

Referring to Saturday's incident in which one villager was killed and six others including three policemen were injured in a violent clash, Marandi said the agitation was rather to pressurise the government to release three activists of Jharkhand Ulgulan Manch, who were arrested by the police under various sections of IPC.

Asked whether the Maoists had also taken part in the agitation on Saturday in Saharjori under Kathikund police station, he said not only Maoists, several other organisations had also taken part in the violence apart from the locals.

A large-number of people who participated in the agitation were outsiders, he claimed while stating that majority of the innocent tribals were unaware about the reason for the agitation.
