Re: 22nd shodh yatra, champaran: Motihari to Betiah (December 29, 2008 to January 3
Thanks for the message.
Good that a yatra is being organised in Champaran. I am, however, not convinced about the suitability of the timing and appropriateness of the place from where it will begin (Motihari) and the place where it will terminate (Bettiah). This I am saying on the basis of my intimate knowledge. I was born and brought up in Champaran and had my schooling up to high school at Motihari and have done research work on agrarian history of the district, encompassing Gandhiji's satyagrah, published more than three decades ago.
If the yatris really want to acquaint themselves of the changes since Gandhiji's satyagrah in general and Independence in particular, they should visit the areas west of Bettiah and acquaint themselves of the drama enacted in the name of land reforms, especially of Sathi land scandal including the report of Sardar Patel and of Lohia, and the growth of criminal activities.
I am not convinced that this yatra can be anything more than a ritual performed to show to the funding agencies of the NGO(s) sponsoring it. The late PM Chandrashekhar and the late Hindi writer S.H.Vatsyan too had undertaken yatras and the district remained as ignored as it was.
By the way, who told you that Chanakya was born in Champaran? Has ASI got any concrete evidence about Chanakigarh, west of Narkatiaganj? Please, refrain from spreading falsehood.
Dr Girish Mishra
