Dear Ujwal,
There are many things that we as humans cannot have choice.. we
cannot have choice of our parents, and we cannot have choice of our
children..
Caste system is hereditary, and based on ancestors.. hence there are
no choices in caste system too, simply because one cannot change their
forefathers..
There is no such thing called religous sanction in hinduism because it
is not monotheistic.. there does not exists concept of one holy book
similar to semitic religions....
As said many times earlier, the caste and varna are different, and
even varnas are described only by smritis, which were written by kings
to rule their kingdom.. there are thousands of smritis written as per
the times..
To best understand the caste system, we can take the following fields
in the modern india... (or the world)..
* The medical fraternity
* The software fraternity
* The police fraternity (IPS)
* The IAS fraternity
Suppose, if some aliens and come and dominate our country just as
britishers had done before, and let's assume they dont have any prior
knowledge of these social institutions..
and let's assume they want to categorize people to rule us..
Now, the medical fraternity will become a medical caste and so as the
software caste, IPS caste and IAS caste will emerge.. simply because,
they are all bound by the common profession and categorized by the
invading aliens..
And if they had collapsed our educational institutions, then these
castes will become hereditary...
And this is what happened when britishers came.. they simply
categorized indian people for ruling purpose, and till now, its their
categorization in the name of caste, that we are following..
So, the argument, that caste system doesnt give choice is baseless, as
in a family system, we doesnt have choice, (Except for our choosing
our wives :) :) !!!!!!!!! )
But i do agree, that caste has been rigid, but there was not much harm
in it.. No matter it has to be changed, but it does NOT qualify to be
evil..
