Mineral-rich Keonjhar has only 100 km of rail line for passengers
The mineral rich district which contributes substantial revenue to the State exchequer finally witnessed passenger train services on Jakhapura-Keonjhar section of JKB railway line after the Puri- Keonjhar daily Express train was flagged off at Puri by Railway Board chairman Kalyan Coomar Jena.
This can be treated as a historic event if one has to introspect and compare all round growth passenger networks of Indian railways at the national level, but which is only 94 km in the entire district since the erstwhile BNR railways started operation way back in 1884. Later, the South Eastern Railway( SER) started operations in 1960.

The Jakhapura-Kendujhar-Banspani (JKB) railway line, a vital link (155kms) was taken up in the Orissa Legislative Assembly in the 70s and an additional line of 24.79 km (Tomka Junction) was added later on with total eighteen number of railway stations built at a cost of Rs 913.87 from Rs 200 crores as originally estimated in the 1980s, rued Mohanta.
