Conserving biodiversity is a laudable effort and we must protect and conserve the seeds of local land races which have evolved and survived through thousands of years by the efforts of the local farmers. I am sure some of you are aware that the country has a 'Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Act' passed by the parliament. This act enables the farmers protecting local germ plasm of different crops to claim reward. You may like to get in touch with the local agricultural University or its station (Birsa Agricultural Univ. in Ranchi) who can help in this . Best wishes.

Dear all,
This is the best news of the day for me as we indeed need to preserve indegenous seeds. I recall my engagement with Beej Bachao Andolan and their presentation to project partners workshop in Banaras where Afsar Jafri presented the key features and then my appeal to colleagues in 2002 on the occasions of a traning workshop on project planning for the managers of terre des homme in which I asked people to say beej instead of cheese for getting a smile on the face. Most of us are witness to the stories about the farmers suicide and from our villages about the returns from agriculture.There is strong movement is US too against genetically modifed seeds and others that is being done for ecologically hazardous agriculture and transport systems. We have reached peak oil in terms of maximum production per day. Collapse of the ecologically hostile usurious finance system is working as a good input for finding ecologically sustainable ways. Moderating consumption of fossil fuel based services and utilities is considered critical for addressing the climate change. Saving indegenous seeds is the only way out for ecological safety and social equity. Let us strengthen the movement in Bihar and Jharkhand and rest of India and world.
