Human trafficking, the worlds 3rd largest profit making illicit industry according to the United Nations |
|
Human trafficking, the world's 3rd largest profit making illicit industry according to the United Nations office of Drug and Crime. 2-3 millions victims are involved in and out of the country and India is regarded as top source, transit and destination of human trafficking.
New Delhi is regarded as the ideal location for this purpose due to its connectivity to Far East, Middle East and western world.
But the worse is the trafficking of own vulnerable citizens within the boundaries of the country. This is done in an organised way by the gang of people for personal profit and gratification. They lure the weak, innocent and poor section of the young people by giving them false hope of jobs and prosperity in the urban towns, metropolitan cities and more developed parts of India. Most of them are from the poor and tribal areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, west Bengal, orissa and eastern states of India and Andhra Pradesh. The majority of them are minor young girls and boys. They are easily lured by the gangsters and agents who offer them the prospects of working in the places like the capital city of New Delhi and Bollywood Mumbai, Goa, Maharastra and Punjab. Once they are taken to these places, they are passed on to other people and agents on payment of fees and commission and they go back to get more victims and the line of supply and demand of this illicit and illegal trade goes on.
The industry of human trafficking is flourishing due to ever changing and increasing demands. They are prostitution, domestic work, friendship clubs, child sex, tourism, migrant labour, forced marriage and even adoption. All these are illegal and immoral activities and abuse of basic human right of innocent human beings. There are laws to prevent these but unfortunately the implementation is far from satisfactory. Apart from this the main reasons need to be tackled. They include IGNORANCE, POVERTY and lack of JOB OPPORTUNITIES nearer home. But they alone would not be enough in this fast changing world and the age of globalisation. The needs and desires of young people, rich and poor have changed and are willing to take risk to achieve them. However, they and others who live in the rural and tribal areas need to be aware of the exploitation, abuse and consequence of human trafficking and take some positive steps to prevent it amongst its people.
