Dear Readers:

Presently, OUAT, the Agricultural R&D University of Orissa is doing R&D on Genetically Modified crops and seeds and it is too premature to say that those are harmful.

In Odia, there is a proverb - "Nai Na Dekhunu Langala" - means taking off clothes even before reaching at the bank of the river.

If you were ever visited McDonalds and tasted their 'French Fries' - you would have noticed, how lengthy they were. While in India, I wondered, how come potatoes slices be so long ? After coming to US stores, I saw very big size Brinjals, Potatoes and Onions.

I don't really know the reason behind the GM Corp activism in India, where a few bigoted activists spread fear about Genetically Modified Crops and seeds. Trust on your Government and scientists. Mr. Ramdoss is a very good health minister and he is allowing R&D on GM Crops means - "it is not yet proven dangerous".

So is the case with vaccines. Listen to your MBBS pediatrician's advice . Never listen to activists. Vaccines may have very few side affects, but, not vaccinating children is too much dangerous for society. If you don't vaccinate your kid, there are killer viruses and bacterias out there to attack your kid and then use him as medium to spread to other kids in school. Do you know, the AIDs virus was unleashed from Africal jungle, where few tribals were eating unhygenic /dirty animal meat ? Now, we know - AIDS has no cure.

Let me explain you how R&D works and why you should not believe these activists.

Last week, there was a major R&D breakthrough in lithium battery technology; it can either provide a higher storage density than current batteries, or can charge and discharge as fast as a supercapacitor, emptying its entire charge in under 10 seconds.

But, this is at R&D stage and while it charge very quick, it dissipates relatively higher amount of power.
e.g.
  • A 1Wh cell phone battery could charge in 10 seconds, but would pull a hefty 360W in the process.
  • A battery that's sufficient to run an electric vehicle could be fully charged in five minutes—which would make electric vehicles incredibly practical—but doing so would pull 180kW, which is most certainly not practical.
The next target of R&D scientists will be - how to keep the power dissipation low ?

But, now here I would draw an analogy to explain better.

If this R&D is successful - Who will be loser ? ---> GULF countries. No one would buy crude oil - price will fall from $45/barrel to $5/barrel.

So, to prevent this R&D , they will hire some paid activists and create fear among you - Electric (Li battery) vehicles are dangerous for kids/you as there is a chance of electric shock !! - just to create fear among you...; behind the scene they are paid by GULF oil companies..

*Tribals oppose introduction of Bt Brinjal variety*

Statesman News Service
BHUBANESWAR, March 9: Tribal women knocked on the doors of houses around
Bhubaneswar today displaying huge cut-outs of Bt Brinjal asking residents to
oppose the introduction of Bt Brinjal varities in the state.
They visited many houses in Chandrashekarpur, Sahid Nagar, Bapuji Nagar,
Nayapally, MLA colony and OUAT colony. They were assisted by Pradyut, the
co-ordinator of the campaign against Bt. Brinjal.
Orissa Nari Samaj (ONS), a federation of 54 block level organizations spread
across 12 districts of the state, organised the protest.
Pradyut said that unless consumers woke up and protested along with farmers
the movement could not be successful. The challenge to the consumers posed
by the ONS was: "If you don't want to be a lab-rat, register your protest
against Bt. Brinjal. Awake, Act, Act Now."
The Orissa Nari Samaj alleged that the state agriculture minister had
promised that Bt. Brinjal would not be allowed in the state, but that there
had been back-door attempts to carry out trials by the OUAT.
Orissa Nari Samaj and THREAD, another NGO which has spearheaded the movement
against Bt. Brinjal since 2005, alleged that the vegetable was dangerous.
Orissa Nari Samaj asked: "Who is sponsoring the trial? If Monsanto or
American institutions sponsor the trial, then one can not expect any truth
from it. Why should Orissa take up this trial when we don't have any problem
in our brinjal cultivation, which has over 350 varieties? Who will benefit
from this trial? Is OUAT aware that the bio-diversity of Orissa will be
affected if Bt. Brinjal is even tested here? Can they guarantee that they
will ensure non-contamination by cross-pollination?
Orissa Nari Samaj and THREAD, which is spreading organic farming in the
state on a large scale, are concerned that high wind velocity during the
summer will increase the chances of cross-pollination.
Mr G John, the executive director of THREAD, questioned the need for the
trial when farmers are completely dependent on the income from varieties of
native brinjals which have produced no side effects. A recent French study
suggests that Bt. Brinjal produces a protein which induces resistance to
Kanamycin, a common antibiotic, ONS activists said.
"Rats fed on the brinjals suffered from diarrhoea, weight loss and increased
water-consumption. In cows fed with Bt Brinjal, the composition of their
milk changed," they alleged.
"It is time that all consumers take note of this issue and speak out against
these crops. They should reject all genetically-modified crops sneaking
silently into our food systems."
Orissa Nari Samaj demanded a clear policy on GM and supported the
declaration of the state as a GM-free organic agricultural state.
