It is dreadful but a fact. Most medical practitioners qualified or otherwise in our mother land have no respect for the patients poor or rich and poorer they are, the worse treatment they get. They have no respect for the patients and have very little sympathy and understanding of their feelings and worries.I do not fully blame the practitioners for this but the training system is flawed in medical schools and colleges. They are not taught the human values and undrestanding, caring and communication skills as part of the curriculum. They are merely taught diseases and treatments and produce excllent doctors but not caring and understanding doctors. The whole training methods need re think and modification to suit the present day expectation of patients to be treated with respect and dignity. As regards the present day state of affairs, the govts need to take immediate steps to regulate and monitor the practices of all doctors and quaks. They can take at least few steps to protect patients and public in general immediately; 1.Register all practioners in particular quaks and monitor their activities. 2.Restrict the sales of medicines from the pharmacists and chemists by prescription only by qualified practiotioners only except some simle medications. 3.Intravenous therapy should only be advised by qualified and registerd doctors. 4.Vacant doctors' posts at the Block and PHC levels should be filled and make sure they stay there. 5.Primary health care workers in village level should advise and offer help and support to the poor villagers and direct them to the appropriate practitioners available there. There are many things that need to be done but for now that's enough for consideration. Dhuni
