The future is bright ! ( was Re: Unreported World: India - "The Broken People")
This report is a negative one, a sort of pessimistic one.

It has not taken note of Jagjivan Ram, KR Narayan, KG Balakrishnan,
Kakkan of Tamilnadu, Paswan and most importantly, Mayavati.

I know many young men from the Harijan community ( I am purposefully
avoiding the tag given in the original post) who have successfully risen
without much difficulty. The telecom dept, all govt departments of
centre and state are all filled up mainly by Harijans.

Apart from the other castes treating them indifferently, I have noticed
their own kin go away from them once educated. A Harijan boy, who went
through IAS , got married to a girl from another caste. He did not to
visit the slum he was born in nor did he call his parents to his place.
Eventually when he visited his slum, his car stood way outside and his
mother ran to his car and exchanged pleasantries. Irony of ironies ! I
cannot discount things like this happening at least 50 % of the time.

I still maintain and declare that the emancipation of our Harijans will
come from the fellow Indians. Such people are few in number now, but
their number is growing and will soon overwhelm the skeptics who have
washed their hands off the future of Harijan population.

In 1947, the caste system was officially frozen and sealed forever.
Before that , the caste system was fluid. Migration from one caste to
another was possible and was happening. In chola period, one army
division called as Kaikkolar Army later became a caste ! They came to be
called as Kaikkola Mudaliar and even today they live in and around
chennai as weavers. Similarly Vellalars (farmers) of various regions had
interchangeable caste names. In Tamil there is a saying ' Kallar and
Agamudayar slowly became Pillai ". I can go on giving examples.

Even with this hardened boundaries, the Tamil Nadars did splendidly well
to beat ostracism. They were at the lowest rung of the caste hierarchy
just above the Harijans but , by their hard work, captured the grocery
market in Tamilnadu in such a way that they own more than 90 % of all
grocery stores here.

They are now treated at par with Thevars and Pillais who were once their
tormentors. Economically they are the top community in TN today.
Sivakasi , the cracker and printing town, rose solely because of Nadars.

This is an example of how, the future will be for Harijans too. They
will also be respected and accepted.

Venkat
