well, well, i can only say thatsenthil is a bit confused between caste and kula or gula as he spells it. gotra and caste are not the same thing as his own piece also makes clear. people of different castes generally do not belong to the same gula or gotra. so marrying out of caste is the best guarantee of not marrying your sister! have you thought of that, senthil? another thing is that only the savarnas have kula or gotra. the outcastes or untouchables have no gotras. and yet they do not marry their 'sisters'. there are other ways of ensuring that marriage within close kin is not allowed. it is interesteing that senthil, a tamil, is so scared of marrying a 'sister' (of the same gotra or gula or kula) that he would much rather have the caste system continue than have a hierarchy free system when among tamilians and many other south indians and indeed even among maharashtrians marriage between cousins is allowed. not only allowed it is standard practice. what is his stand on this? there are definitions and definitions of kinship! anjali deshpande
