You should know how the tatkal system works. Nearly 30 % of all seats are allotted for Tatkal. That is why even 30 days ahead of a journey you get a waitlisted ticket.
But, what is the modus operandi of this Tatkal robbery ? Well, here is it. I am in Coimbatore. I want to book a ticket to Chennai. The day train to Chennai starts from Cochin and passes through Coimbatore. If under Tatkal I want to book a ticket to Chennai, I have to pay the full fare from Cochin to Chennai. How is that ? Plus, you have to pay Tatkal charges.
This is Lallu special pickpocketing. Also, another of Lallu's innovations was an additional berth in the second class compartment. You know where it was inserted ? Just between the top and bottom of the side seats (usually given to RAC tickets). Whoever slept in that will definitely curse his co passengers on the top and bottom and Lallu especially ! I found Sleeper class fare for Delhi to Mumbai in Dadar Express is Rs.429 with reservation for 1535km journey. Bus fare for Delhi to Jalandhar 370 km is Rs. 231 for cramped seats. Delhi Howrah sleeper class fare in Howrah Mail Superfast train is Rs. 433 for 1444 km journey. In same fare if one wants to enjoy little 10 hours extra journey he can opt for Toofan Express for 1552 kilometer travel.
Sleeper Class Fare in Dadar Express is 0.27p/km for fast and comfortable journey whereas Bus Fare for Ordinary seating is 0.62p/km.
My cousin had reservation wait list 128 in a 10 coach Mahamaya express train to Jabalpur . When the super fast train arrived at the originating station I found though chart was full but there were so many vacant berths. Couple of hours later I called her to find out she had confirmed reservation. Only people who don't book in advance go for Tatkal.. Obviously there is some corruption. But I asked my cousin did you pay any bribe she replied no.
Yes coaches were in poor condition. But so many Super Fast trains are hauled by ABB Locomotives for high speed and reliability.
Around 20-30 years ago I remember rail fare used to be much higher particularly for shorter distances to discourage short distance passengers. Rail Fare for 60 kilometer was Rs.10 in Super fast trains but around Rs.2.50 in ordinary trains same for bus service. But daily passengers continue to pay around Rs.50 to Rs. 100 per month for pass valid for local trains but invariable commuters' board express trains as well.
No one in the press or Lalu haters complained of over 400, I don't know the exact figure of "Unviable Projects Under Implementation" not withdrawn by politicians or stopped by Lalu.
I asked him at a seminar to provide "Rajpura – (Mohali) Chandigarh " 30 km link that would connect Chandigarh to 1500 km rail network of Punjab . He told me to get this proposal forwarded by MPs of Punjab. Actually for over 15 years I have been campaigning for it.
Every one has to contribute for better performance of Railways – actually most are interested in pulling it back.
