May 7 / Telegraph: Attend classes, pass a test and earn an incentive of Rs 2,500.

This is what the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) is offering to the illiterate masses of its command areas to fulfil its corporate social responsibility. It forms a part of the public sector undertaking's programme to attain total literacy in its mining areas by 2011-12. And to achieve this objective, the CCL management has launched a scheme, Akshar Jyoti.

Under the scheme, a three-month literacy course will be held for the illiterate. The company will pay an incentive of Rs 2,500 to those who will pass a rudimentary test after completing the course. Besides, it will also provide snack packets to those enrolling for the course.

The scheme will be implemented through 82 schools situated in CCL's command areas, including Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Chatra, which will act as the nodal agencies. The vocational training centres, around 60 and more, run by the company in its mining areas will also be involved.

Also benefiting from the scheme will be the literate but unemployed youths of the areas. They will be roped in as motivators-cum-trainers and each of them will get an honourarium of Rs 100 per class.

"We have decided to start with a modest target of 2,000 to 3,000 people in each command area. We will use roadside shows, skits and documentary films to motivate the residents to join our courses," CCL director (personnel) T.K. Chand said. "We have asked the staff officers to act as nodal officers in their respective areas," he added.

The company has also decided to adopt and develop two Naxalite-affected villages, Simartoli and Liptamtoli.
